MVP DESIGN PROCESS: FROM IDEA TO LAUNCH

Writer: Den TkachenkoDen Tkachenko

Goal:

Deliver a high-impact, user-validated MVP that balances speed, quality, and adaptability for future scaling.

Scope: 30-40 unique screens → Start with Web, then adapt to Mobile.

Total Timeline: 5 Weeks:

🚀 Week 1 – Discovery & Strategy >
> Weeks 2-4 – Design Sprints (Feature-driven execution) >
> Week 5 – User Testing & Final Refinements 🌕

Week 1: Deep Discovery & Market Research

Why? The strongest products come from solving real user problems, not assumptions. This phase ensures we build something valuable, feasible, and scalable.

What We Do:

1️⃣ Stakeholder & Business Discovery (Day 1-2)→ Interviews with founders, product owners, and system architects to define:

  • Business goals & KPIs

  • Product vision & competitive edge

  • Technical constraints & scalability considerations

2️⃣ User & Market Research (Day 3-4)→ One structured research round to validate user problems & needs:

  • User interviews & persona mapping

  • Competitor & industry benchmarking

  • Customer journey mapping (CJM)

3️⃣ Feature Prioritization & MVP Scope (Day 5)→ Define core features (vs. "nice-to-have")→ Establish design system direction (buy/custom - requires additional effort)

Outcome:

A validated roadmap for the next 4 weeks → Clear user needs, MVP scope, and design framework.

Weeks 2-4: Design Execution (Feature Sprints)

Why? Instead of designing everything at once, we break work into feature-driven sprints → faster iterations, less risk, and more agility.

Weekly Breakdown:

Each feature sprint follows the SEXI Design Process (3-5 days per feature).

Monday – Kickoff & Research (if needed)

Tuesday – Wireframes & UX

Wednesday – High-fidelity UI

Thursday – Review & refinements

Friday – Handoff to development

Feature Sprint Flow (approximate example):

1️⃣ Sprint 1: Core Flows (Sign-up, Onboarding, Dashboard)

2️⃣ Sprint 2: Key Interactions (Data Input, Navigation, User Actions)

3️⃣ Sprint 3: Advanced Features (Integrations, Settings, Customization)

Outcome: A polished, development-ready MVP design for Web.

Week 5: User Testing & Final Refinements

Why? Validating early = fewer costly mistakes in development.

What We Do:

User Testing (5 users/day, AI-assisted analysis)

Critical Iterations & Fixes (Only addressing validated UX blockers)

Final Handoff – Full documentation & dev support

Outcome: A user-validated MVP ready for development & multi-platform expansion.

What’s Next? Adapting to Mobile & Tablet

Why? We don’t start from scratch. Once the Web MVP is set, we adapt & optimize for smaller screens.

UI Adaptation (2 Weeks) – Responsive adjustments, native patterns

Platform-Specific UX Tweaks – Mobile-first interactions, accessibility

Final Testing & Handoff

Outcome: A fully adaptable MVP across Web, Mobile, and Tablet.

Project setup:

1️⃣ A small, focused design team (at least 1 UX & 1 UI designer, or a hybrid principal designer who can switch between both).

2️⃣ A dedicated stakeholder (PM/Founder/PO) actively involved to provide quick feedback and unblock decisions.

3️⃣ Fast validation loops (e.g., async reviews, real-time collaboration, AI-assisted analysis for user testing).
